FORDINGBRIDGE AND DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
AGM – 26th November 2018
Chaired by its President Mr John Crout, the Society’s 48th AGM was held at Avonway on Monday 26th November 2018. Following his warm welcome to the 40 members present, John thanked the Chairman Mrs Susan Hockin for seeing us through another good year, one of the highlights being our outing to West Dean Gardens & Chichester in June.
Society Chairman Mrs Susan Hockin began her report with a reference to the varied weather conditions that gardeners have endured this year
Meetings during the year introduced us to many interesting speakers, and thanks were given to Debbie Merry for her first full year of organising these.
Two Members Shows were put together by Graham Fry and their success was attributable to the hard work he put in. Even so, we would like to see more of the membership getting involved with exhibiting in 2019. Everyone was encouraged to “Have a Go”.
The outing to West Dean Gardens was a great success. In 2019 we shall be revisiting Wisley, a garden that we have not been to for quite some while so it will be interesting to see their new areas and innovative ideas.
Wendy Johnson & Rosemary Nicholls were thanked for organising the refreshment rota for the year. Volunteers are needed to help, and members were encouraged to sign the new list in January. Keith Bennett our Treasurer and Bob Allen our Publicity Officer do a sterling job in their roles with the Secretary working hard in the background keeping everyone in line. Having a supportive Committee makes the Chairman’s job so much easier and enables the Society to run smoothly.
Concluding her report, Susan thanked all members for their support and help, without which we would not have a Society.
The Treasurer, Mr Keith Bennett, presented members with a summary of the financial situation for the year ending 30th September 2018. The total excess of expenditure over income for the period was £276.96. Members were given a breakdown of the income and expenditure figures for the year, where our biggest outlays were speakers’ fees and the hire of Avonway.
The Treasurer confirmed that the subscription rate for 2018 will continue unchanged at £8.50.
John Crout, our President, having completed two successful three year terms of office, was re-elected to continue for one further year, but announced that he would retire at next year’s AGM.
The retiring Society Officers and Committee were unanimously re-elected en bloc to serve again in 2019.
The results of the Table Show – a flower arrangement entitled “A Seasonal Arrangement”, kindly judged for us by John Crout our President, were as follows:
1st: Christine Bennett 2nd: Susan Hockin 3rd: Marilyn Giddens
Christine Bennett is the worthy overall winner of the Table Show competitions held during the year and she was presented with a new Trophy by the Society President, John Crout.
Harry Brownings, having won the competition on three previous occasions, was presented with the Society Shield by the President to retain in perpetuity, as there no spaces left on the Shield to record the name of further winners.
Following the business part of the meeting and the presentations, members enjoyed a splendid cheese & wine buffet supper co-ordinated by Graham Fry, ending with a raffle, comprising prizes brought along by the Committee and members alike. Thanks to everyone for their contributions again this year.
During the course of the buffet supper, and at the prior request from the Committee, David Manston presented an enthusiastic illustrated introduction to the various classifications of Daffodils with a view to stimulating members interest and encouraging everyone to submit an exhibit in one of the five Daffodil classes that will be featured as part of our Spring Show in March 2019.
